Lot Essay

The stamp of the Wardour Street chair-maker John Gee has been recorded on a number of closely related japanned and cane-seated parlour chairs executed in the first decade of the 19th century (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, fig. 391). A set of related chairs, painted with picturesque Yorkshire views, was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 20 January 1995, lot 408.
