Lot Essay

This mirror was made for the Library and invoiced in 1817 as follows: 'A Large Silvered Plate Glass for chimney piece £43 10s' and 'An Oak frame richly inlaid W'h Holly for Do £13 12s'. It is likely to be that illustrated in the watercolour of the old Library (superceded by the new Gothic Library) illustrated by lot 178. The library furnishings of British oak served to evoke the age of Shakespeare, and in place of Grecian palms were inlaid with ribbon-bands of native honey-suckle.
