Lot Essay

Simpson arrived in India in 1859, and spent the following two years travelling the country. He executed countless sketches, some of which were worked into more finished compositions for exhibition, some of which were engraved for his seminal work India Ancient and Modern, 1867. Simpson's distinction as both artist and traveller, evinced in these watercolours, is the intelligence and interest with which he records the daily rituals of India's people.

Two watercolours of The Ghats of Mirzapore and Buddhist Rock Cut Temple, Ajanta were included in the sale of the Collction of William and Mildred Archer; Christie's, London, 24 September 2003, lots 49 and 50, where they realised 500 and £13,000 respectively.
