The racing yacht Freda: At the start; and At the finish

Designed and built by J. Beavor Webb for Mr. Thomas Freke in 1880, Freda was a remarkably successful cutter and won more prizes than any other boat in her class in her first three seasons. A classic '20-tonner' measuring 51 feet in length with a 10 foot beam, "she proved immeasurably superior to the whole of the rest of the class" in the summer of 1880, and finished the season with twenty-one winners' flags to her credit. Despite these successes, Freke sold her to Mr. F. Taylor for whom she did equally well the following year (1881) by winning seventeen first prizes out of thirty-two starts, the best tally of the season. With twenty first prizes in 1882, Freda again led the field but she was less successful in 1883 and her star was waning. By 1884 she had been sold again, this time to Herbert Salwey, and she disappears from record soon afterwards.
