Designed by W. Fife & Son at Fairlie in 1897, Senga was a large wooden 35-ton cutter with a 52 feet waterline length and a 12 foot beam. After a disappointing first season, she was acquired by the notable yachtsman Mr. Wyndham Cook who enjoyed such success with her that she proved the crack boat of her class, winning 25 firsts and 9 seconds out of 44 starts, in the season of 1899.
