The Lunar Geological Exploration Camera (LGEC) was designed around 1970 for use on NASA's space missions. NASA placed the contract to develop the camera with Goerz Optical Co. Inc.'s Systems Division and the camera's development was reputed to have cost $1 million.
The camera was designed to take stereometric and telephoto views and to record the conditions in which the photographs were taken. The data was recorded directly on to the film. The camera was designed to a tight specification with regard to weight, performance and reliability, and to conserve astronaut time and to retain quality.
The NASA image referenced above dating to 1970 shows a prototype version of the camera in astronaut training.
This camera is the first production example.
