GRETA GARBO HANDWRITTEN LETTER TO GILBERT ROLAND
1943
A four page letter handwritten in pencil by Greta Garbo to Gilbert Roland when he was serving in the Army. Postmarked August 18, 1943/Beverly Hills, Calif., this odd note reveals the murky relationship she and Roland were having; she writes in part "...but I wouldn't know about my feeling(s) until I actually see you...I am confused and in chaos (slightly)...when I go to N. York...maybe you could come and see me." Garbo continues on with the fantasy that they could live in an athletic club together and play tennis, but then she abruptly ends the correspondence (sans signature) with a cryptic sentence reading "And perhaps I will let you borrow the ring, but only maybe." Included is the original tranmittal envelope, also pencilled in Garbo's hand, reading "Lieut. Gilbert Roland/O.R.T.C./Seymour Johnson Field/North Carolina."
8 x 6 inches
