VIVIEN LEIGH COSTUME DESIGN SKETCH SIGNED BY WALTER PLUNKETT FROM "GONE WITH THE WIND"
Selznick International Pictures/MGM, 1939
A watercolor and pencil on board sketch depicting Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara wearing a red dress rendered by Walter Plunkett during the pre-production phases. Signed "Plunkett" in the lower right-hand corner, this piece has a date of (39)" on the verso as well as a 'Selznick International Pictures, Inc.' stamp with handwritten notations indicating the design was "For: Vivien Leigh/Picture No. 20-108/Change No. 28-29?/O.K. By Mr. Selznick (with a pencilled 'DOS' initial)/Set No. Int Butler Home (Scarlett's Bedroom)/Scarlett's Bedroom/Rhett forces her to doors/for party and drawer scene". This dress ends up being the one Scarlett wears for one of the most famous scenes in Hollywood film history; the one in which Rhett takes her, against her will, to their bedroom upstairs for the one night she won't "turn him out."
19 x 16 inches
Provenance
The current owner's parents received this sketch as a wedding present in 1940 from a relative who was then employed at Selznick Studios.
