Further details
Junior Marvin joined Bob Marley And The Wailers in February, 1977 as lead guitarist shortly before the recording sessions began that produced both the 'Exodus' and 'Kaya' albums at Island Studios, London. After Marley's untimely death in May, 1981, Junior took over lead vocals with The Wailers, composing many of their hit songs throughout the '80s and '90s until their split in 1997.
According to the accompanying documents, Marley asked Junior Marvin if he could use this guitar during the recording of the 'Kaya' album at Island Studios and played it specifically on 'Is This Love?' and 'Time Will Tell.' Aston "Family Man" Barrett also recalls Marley using this guitar during these sessions. According to Marvin, this was the only 12-string acoustic that Marley used in his recordings, although he certainly owned a Hohner 12-string that he used at home for composing purposes around the time of the 'Survival' album in 1979.
'Kaya' was Bob Marley's ninth album. The previous year's 'Exodus' album enjoyed great commercial success, largely on the strength of the hugely popular hit 'Jammin.' In 1979, with the 'Survival' album, Marley largely addressed the political issues that concerned him. Between those two albums, 'Kaya' is a peaceful album, and has been variously described as a rehabilitation after his assassination attempt in Jamaica, an expression of love and an ode to marijuana (kaya).
