A large lacquered wood brushpot, 17th century
finely decorated in gilt with a panel depicting precious objects to one side and a mountainous landscape scene with figures standing on a bridge and seated beneath pine amongst pavillions to the other, the sides between the two panels with an inscription describing the joy of the calligrapher upon passing the Imperial civil service examination, signed ming xi jie yin shan ren with a gui you cyclical date probably dating the brush pot to 1693 -- 10 3/8in. (26.2cm.) diam.
