BEROALDUS, Philippus (1453-1505). De felicitate. -De optimo statu. Paris: Dionysius Roce, August 1501.
Chancery 4° (177 x 125mm). Roman and Greek type, two full-page woodcuts (Virgin Mary, Christ), woodcut Roce device on title, woodcut initials. Modern vellum with single gilt fillet. Provenance: contemporary inscription at end (washed).
FIRST USE OF THESE STRIKING WOODCUTS. Roce used them again five days later to frame a similar volume of Beroaldus' works (Mortimer Harvard French 53). De felicitate has previously been considered an incunable but it properly forms a single edition with De optimo statu, dated 1501. I: GW 4137; II: BLSTC French, p.50.
