JAMES VI and I, King of Scotland (1567-1625) and of England (1603-1625)]. Document, 'The humble petition of [the] Nobilitie of England', addressed to the King and signed by thirty-three members of the peerage, n.p., n.d. [1621], the heading written in an italic hand, the text comprising 16 lines in a secretary hand, 33 signatures in the lower portion of the document, one page, double folio, 560 x 440 mm, contemporary endorsement (tear in right hand area with part loss of one signature, slight occasional wear, minor repairs, partly backed).
A protest against the disadvantage caused to the English peerage by the lavish grant of Irish and Scottish titles of nobility.
'Our humble desier is, that with yo[u]r gracious allowance, wee may challenge & preserve our birthrightes, and that wee may take no more notice of theis Titulers (to our p[re]judice) then the lawe of this land doth, but that wee may bee excused, yf in cyvill Curtesye wee give them not the respect nor place as to Noblemen strangers'.
