CROMWELL, Richard (1626-1712). Autograph letter signed to unidentified correspondents (the Lords of the Council), Hursley, 28 April [16]57, one page, folio, contemporary annotation in margin (integral leaf removed).
An interesting letter going into some detail on the preservation and administration of the New Forest, 'be pleased to permitt the fforest officers to deliver the Timber att the waterside ffree of charge, if the monyes raised from the saied trees will doe it ... Sometimes the Lapps & Topps will more than defray the charge of felling, squaring and carredge, which overplus is put unto other casuall monyes that riseth oute of ye fforest' and referring to an earlier meeting with his correspondents 'in your Admiralty roome in Whitehall', and to the irregular activities of the Commissioners of the Admiralty in the past.
Given the general lack of evidence of any serious activity on Richard's part at this time, his interest in the state of the forest and the requirements of the shipyard at Portsmouth may have been prompted by his father-in-law, Richard Mayor, who lived at Hursley, where this letter was written.
