ANNE, Queen of England (1702-1714). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified royal correspondent ('Monsieur mon Frere', Louis XIV ?), St James's, 5 May 1711, in French, 2 pages, 4to, blank integral leaf.
A plea on behalf of the Duke of Savoy (Victor Amadeus II), drawing attention to his claims confirmed by the treaty to which she and the States General are guarantors, for her correspondent to cede to him his estates as soon as possible, because of the importance for the allies of the Duke going on campaign shortly, the letter continuing with further persuasive comments.
The Duke of Savoy, an astute diplomat as well as military commander, was supported by England in his claims to a number of places in Northern Italy and elsewhere during the War of the Spanish Succession, in which he supported first Spain and France then, for a time, Austria. The French invaded Piedmont, but were driven out, before the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 gave him the Kingdom of Sicily.
