NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Letter signed ('Horatio Nelson') to Francis 'Werry' [Wherry], British Consul at Smyrna, 'Vanguard off Malta', 26 October 1798, 2 pages, 4to, integral leaf, docketed (lightly spotted).

A brisk acknowledgement of his correspondent's congratulations 'on my recent Victory over the French Fleet [at the Nile on 1 August]', and on naval and military matters: 'I hope to soon hear of the destruction of their whole armament at Alexandria, by the Turkish and Russian Fleets and of the fall of Bonaparte. Malta is Blockaded by a part of the Squadron under my Command and the Maltese, who have revolted against the French are in complete possession of the Island except the town of Valette, and the French are in great distress for the want of Provisions and will I hope soon surrender'. Nelson also refers to the appointment of General Mack to the Sicilian army and the French surrender to Cornwallis in Ireland, and asks for information particularly about the Turkish and the Russian fleets.

Nelson's great victory off Alexandria, on 1 August, was the culmination of his dramatic chase around the Mediterranean in pursuit of Bonaparte, after the latter broke out of Toulon on 19 May. The enemy fleet was virtually eliminated, without the loss of a single British ship.
