A jubilant announcement of the end of the siege of Acre: Enclosing documents to be forwarded, Nelson describes letters received from Constantinople by way of Zante, giving the news from Acre on 16 May, that Bonaparte was shot in the leg on the 12th and the siege raised, including also the numbers of wounded and killed, 'the French are all dying with disease thank God, thank God, so finish all Villains'.

From 25 June - 2 August 1799 Nelson and the Hamiltons lived on the Foudroyant, off Naples, in communication with Acton (the former prime minister) and the King, following the recovery of Naples from the French. Duckworth had been at Minorca since the beginning of July. Following the collapse of the siege at Acre, Bonaparte abandoned the army in Egypt and, evading the English blockade, landed in France on 9 October.
