FIRST EDITION, illustrating Loulié's invention of a 'chronometre', used to fix tempo, which was approved by the Académie des Sciences in 1701. 'His discussions of tempo, metre, transposition, ornamentation, key and temperament are particuarly important for the development of French theory' (Grove 11, 256). Eitner VI, 230; RISM B VI/1, 518.
