Lot Essay

Nikanor Chernetsov studied at the Academy in St. Petersburg with his elder brother Grigorii. Nikanor travelled extensively around Russia especially the Crimea. On his first visit to Italy in 1841 he executed many watercolours, but it was not until his second tour that he painted such detailed panoramic oils.

This lot is sold with a black and white photograph dated 1910, showing this to be the original frame, together with the letter written on behalf of Prince Friedrich Leopold of Prussia to the purchaser and dated 9th July 1927.
