Lot Essay

After the execution and the success of his large canvas The defense of Sebastopol, Colonel V.A. Afanassiev suggested in 1910, that Roubaud should execute a large panorama depicting the battle field of Borodino, one of the main battles of the 1812 patriotic war against the French.

Finished in 1912, the large panorama (14x115.5cm.) was exhibited at the same time as exhibition commemorating the Patriotic War.
