Lot Essay
The central scene of Venus and Adonis is taken from a painting attributed to H. van Limborch, oil on canvas, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague. A similar example of a 17th century German plaque 'improved' by an early 19th century silversmith may be noted in the sale of silver from Wentworth, sold Christie's, London, 8 July 1998, lots 157 and 158. The former is a dish by a member of the Jager family of Augsburg, circa 1660, with figures and border applied by Edward Farrell, circa 1820; and the latter, a border by Farrell now enclosing a later mirror, is inscribed '...This Border made to receive this Dish of Unknown Assay weighing 59oz. 12'.
