A George III provincial silver inkstand
Mark of Robert Cattle and James Barber, York, 1810
Shaped oblong on four paw feet, the gadrooned border with foliate shell angles, with two pen-wells and three detachable bottle-holders with gadrooned borders, fitted with two cut-glass bottles and oblong stamp-box, each with neck-mount and hinged cover, the bottle-covers each engraved with a crest, the stamp-box cover with a coat-of-arms, marked on stand, holders and covers
11¼in. (29cm.) long
39oz. (1,243gr.) without bottles
The arms are those of Twisleton of Drax and Goole, co. York and Osbaston, co. Leicester.

Lot Essay

A very similar inkstand, by Hampston, Prince and Company, York, 1806, is illustrated in Exhibition Catalogue, York Silver 1475-1858, from the collection of William Lee, York, 1972, no. 38, p. 20. Another, by Cattle and Barber, York, 1807, was sold Christie's, South Kensington, 9 September 2003, lot 251.
