Mark of Peze Pilleau, London, 1731, the lamp, 1956
The kettle, bullet-shaped, with silver and turned part-wood swing handle, finely engraved with a border of brickwork, scrolls, putti and foliage, the hinged flat cover with wood button finial, the stand, circular with moulded borders, on three scroll legs with wooden bun feet, with chain and pin, the hemispherical lamp with detachable circular cover and hinged bell-shaped extinguisher, the kettle engraved with a coat-of-arms, the lamp with a crest, marked on kettle and cover, stand, and lamp and cover

The arms are those of Pollen impaling St. John, for John Pollen Esq. (d.1775) and his wife Hester, daughter of Ellis St. John of Farley and Dogmersfield Park, Hampshire, whom he married in 1731. Pollen was a practising lawyer and Whig politican. He served as M.P. for Andover from 1734 until 1754. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Welsh court circuit in 1754.
