by Antoine Chayé (fl. 1747-1791), marked, Paris, 1748/1749, with the charge and discharge marks of Antoine Leschaudel 1744-1750, later struck with two French provincial post-1838 warranty marks for gold with distinctive letter for Marseilles
Slightly tapering étui of oval section, all over engine-turned with spiralling gadrooning, reeded slightly raised rims, the slightly domed cap centred by a blank ovolo, the matrix engraved with an acollé coat-of-arms with a French marquis's coronet above

The arms are those of François-Xavier de Coriolis de Villeneuve, marquis d'Espinouse, who was a Président à mortier of the Parliament of Provence, and of his second wife Charlotte-Pauline-Alexandrine-Elisabeth de Roux, marquise de Courbons, daughter of the first President of the Parliament of Pau and his wife Madeleine-Charlotte de Bullion.
