Lot Essay

William Frederick Henry of Orange-Nassau, Prince of the Netherlands was a son of King William II and Anna Paulovna, Grand Duchess of Russia. He married Amalia of Saxe-Weimar Eisenach in 1853 and secondly in 1878, Maria of Prussia. The present miniature is strongly related to a full-length portrait of Henry by Nicolaas Pieneman of 1848 which has been reproduced in lithography by Franciscus B. Waanders. We are grateful to Dr Karen E. Schaffers-Bodenhausen, Director of the Iconografisch Bureau, The Hague for her help in the cataloguing of this miniature.
