Lot Essay

On the death of his older brother, Alexander I (see lots 245 and 260) in 1825, Constantine was proclaimed Emperor. However, due to his morganatic marriage, he had renounced his claim to the throne in favour of his younger brother, Nicholas (see lot 246).
