Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the sitter is a portrait of the artist's wife. According to the artist's diaries, a companion piece entitled Envy was painted at the same time showing the sitter in a white dress, nearer the window, with the same rug and curtain. However, this painting was not exhibited at the R.S.B.A. and its location is unknown.
We are grateful to Hazel Dolling for her help in preparing this entry.
