With nickel-finished lever movement, 21 jewels, the gilt dial with Roman numerals, inner ring calibrated for eight major winds, inner rotating disk adjustable for position of Earth's angle of axis, two blued steel hands, red hand indicating relative position of Sun in the sky, the circular case with hinged bezel the flips up to 90 degrees to serve as a solar compas, snap on back, together with an 18K gold Longines buckle, case, dial and movement signed
39 mm. diam.

Lot Essay

This watch is accompanied by a Longines fitted presentation box, Certificat d'Origine, booklets, papers, glass bottle with glass ship inside and outer packaging.

This watch was made in 1992 to commemmorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' first landing in the New World. The watch is designed with some of the celestial navigation tools that Columbus used on his journey.

Using the dial in conjunction with hinged bezel, the location of the Sun in the sky can be determined using shadows.
