The sitter, the daughter of Charles, 2nd Earl of Berkeley and Elizabeth, daughter of Baptist Noel, Viscount Campden, was the second wife of Sir John Germaine of Middlesex. Their three children James, John and Elizabeth, died in infancy. His first wife, Lady Mary Germaine, daughter and heir of Henry, Earl of Peterborough, died in 1705, and left her whole estate, including the family seat, Drayton House, Northamptonshire, to Sir John who bequeathed it at his death to his second wife. On the death of the sitter, the estate passed to Lord George Sackville, soldier and statesman, who was created Baron Bolebroke and Vicount Sackville of Drayton on 11 February 1782. He assumed by Act of Parliament on 16 February 1770, the surname of Germaine.
