Lot Essay

The sitter, the daughter of Montague Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey (b.1608), K.G., and his wife Martha, daughter of Sir William Cokayne, of Northamptonshire, married Robert Dormer (1629-1694) of Rousham, Oxfordshire. Her father had fought in the Royalist cause in the English Civil War at the battles of Edgehill (1642) and Naseby (1645) and was Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire (1660-66) and Lord Great Chamberlain at the Coronation of King Charles II.
