Lot Essay

The pose of the prancing horse is similar to that in a Portrait of Sa'adat Ali Khan (oil on canvas, circa 1800; The British Library, London, F562). Sa'adat Ali Khan reigned in Lucknow between 1798-1814 and the position of the horse is repeated in other portraits originating in that area.
