Lot Essay

The sitter was daughter of William Eden, 1st Lord Auckland, and Eleanor, second daughter of Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto. On 1 June 1799 she became the second wife of Robert, 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire, she died, childless, on 15 October 1851. Her husband was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies and the capital of Tasmania was named after him. He died childless on 4 February 1816 and was succeeded by his nephew, George Robert Hampden.
