Lot Essay

The sitter was the wife of Robert Herries (1730-1815), a banker and Colonel of the City Light Horse Volunteers, and Member of Parliament for Dumfries, who was knighted in 1774. Sittings are recorded in July, November, and December 1783 and a payment of £21 was received from Sir Robert Herries in July 1785.
