Lot Essay

Sidley established success as a painter of portraits and occasional genre subjects. He studied at Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy, exhibiting 31 works at the RA from 1855-95. As a portraitist he won frequent commissions from society sitters such as the Bishop Colenso (1866, National Portrait Gallery), Lady Brassey and the Duke and Duchess of Buckingham. The challenge is illustrated in Royal Academy Notes, and was reportedly engraved.
