Lot Essay

A copy after the portrait of Queen Victoria by Winterhalter, signed and dated 1842, and measuring 52½ x 38½ in. at Windsor Castle (see Sir Oliver Millar, The Victorian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, 1992, no. 809, pl. 711). As with other copies of this portrait and the engravings, but unlike the original, the Queen wears the insignia of the Garter.
