The first a cutlass with shortened curved hollow-ground blade by J. J. Runkel of Solingen (some pitting) bearing etched decoration, robust engraved brass guard with knucklebow and two additional hinged bars, wire-bound shagreen-covered grip (slight losses), and ornamental backstrap, in a shortened black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape, both engraved with trophies, the locket signed 'Knubley & Co, No 7 Charing Cross, London'; the second with straight fullered double-edged blade, massive brass half-basket guard of flattened bars incorporating a later silver anchor, small shell and thumb-ring on the inner side, wire-bound leather-covered grip, and black leather scabbard with brass mounts and massive suspension-rings, the locket engraved with later signature 'G. Hunter Edinburgh'
