AN ENGLISH NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD WITH GILT-BRASS HILT, AND AN ENGLISH BRASS-HILTED NAVAL HANGER
The first late 18th Century, the second early 19th Century
The first with curved double-fullered blade double-edged towards the point, "slotted" hilt with lion's head pommel, and wooden grip bound with copper wire and ribbon, in original scabbard with gilt-brass mounts with stamped decoration and two suspension-rings, the mouth-locket with pricked signature 'Bibb Newport Street' (chape missing); the second with broad curved hollow-ground blade (rust-patinated), the back stamped with maker's name 'Josh Reddell & Co', the "slotted" hilt with urn-shaped pommel engraved with a fouled anchor, and spirally grooved wooden grip originally bound with wire (missing), in original brass-mounted leather scabbard
