A BASKET-HILTED BROADSWORD AND A COMPOSITE GERMAN SPORTING CROSSBOW
The first 17th Century
The first with tapering blade with two full-length fullers on each side, each stamped 'Ihn Solingen', iron guard of slender bars and panels, fore-guards, later globose pommel, and spirally fluted wooden grip (cracked, surface rust throughout); the second with robust steel bow with iron loops and later string (defective), slotted sighted octagonal iron barrel, and wooden stock (partly replaced) decorated with carved fish-scales between borders of inlaid white staghorn lines and dots (some losses), with an acorn in white staghorn in front of the cheek-piece, and a solid staghorn panel on the underside engraved with a stork (damaged, parts missing)
