With sighted barrel, the lock stamped with an elephant (for the Royal Niger Company) and marked 'Warranted' on the tail, walnut stock with raised moulding at the barrel tang, brass mounts, single iron sling-swivel (the other missing), and iron ramrod, together with a later socket bayonet in its leather scabbard (iron parts with surface rust), Birmingham proof marks

Lot Essay

The Royal Niger Company received its charter to trade in what is now Nigeria, in competition with French and German companies. It was dissolved on 31 December 1899
