A ROMAN BRONZE INCENSE SHOVEL
Circa 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
The lunate bowl with a flanged rim, ridged along the outer walls, decorated with punched registers of zigzags and circles, the front corners with lion-paw feet, floral extensions on either side of the hinge at the back, the elaborate lid with a row of garlands around the overhanging lip, surmounted by an eagle standing over a goat head on each front corner, the center open to a hollow bust of a lynx with erect pointed ears, open mouth and lolling tongue, a winged Victoria behind with a laurel wreath in her extended right hand crowning the lynx, an orb in her left, the handle in the form of two knobbed clubs joined at their heads, the end open with outward-curving petals revealing the long neck and head of a lynx with a lolling tongue
