Lot Essay

Often cited as a leading Australian Modernist, Gruner was one of the most influential and popular land and seascape painters during the inter-war period. Gruner's works are characterized by an atmosphere of tranquility. Sydney Harbour depicts the harbour and city from the north shore in and around Mosman. The untouched beauty of the natural world is depicted by subtle variations of natural light raking across the canvas as it hits the landscape and sandy shores of the ragged bays and inlets.
