Twenty-eight versions of this portrait by Bronzino's studio are known (see R. Simon, 'Bronzino's portrait of Cosimo I', The Burlington Magazine,CXXV, September 1983, pp. 527-39, and ''Blessed be the hand of Bronzino', the portrait of Cosimo I in armour', The Burlington Magazine, CXXIX, June 1987, pp. 387-8). The present lot compares most closely to that in the Tribuna of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
