Lot Essay

Caspar Wetter (1796-1871), a leading citizen of Saint Gallen, Switzerland, married Caroline Aepli, daughter of Alexander Aepli (1767-1832), a local doctor, in about 1823. Their son Hermann Otto Wetter, wearing a blue shirt on the right of this portrait, became a merchant and later an important benefactor to the town: he gave 100,000 francs to found a hospice and the same amount to set up a cultural foundation which was to be called the Otto-Wetter-Jacob-Stiftung.
