Lot Essay

These chairs were conceived in the so-called Russian Jacob style which became popular in the late 18th century and continued to enjoy great popularity until 1830. It is uncertain who coined this term for this specific type of furniture, but it applies to all Russian brass-mounted mahogany furniture. Due to its popularity there was a huge demand for this type of furniture and consequently it was to be found in the Royal palaces, the aristocratic as well as the bourgeois interiors of the time.
For a short discussion on the Russian Jacob style and several examples of this style, please see Antoine Chenevière Russian Furniture 1780 - 1840, London, 1988, pp. 110 - 144. A closely related chair is shown on plate 141.
