Joan Crawford/Hall Bartlett
A collection of correspondence between Joan Crawford and director, Hall Bartlett, relating to The Caretakers, 1963, comprising:
- a black and white portrait photograph of Joan Crawford, circa 1960s, signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint pen Hall - Thank you for your integrity and your friendship - Gratefully, Joan -- 13x10in. (33x25.4cm.) framed;
- a telegram from Crawford to Bartlett, ink-stamped 22nd June, 1961, ...so happy to get your letter...can't wait to hear about script...; and
- six typescript notes on Joan Crawford headed stationery to Hall Bartlett, five signed in blue ballpoint pen Joan, the majority thanking him for flowers or gifts, however one dated 15th January, 1963, berating him for cutting a scene from The Caretakers ...there is no rhyme [sic] nor reason for my performance in "The Caretakers", since you have eliminated my scene with McBain, and all cuts and looks that I played subtly to indicate my attraction for Stack. Cutting the scene where McBain accuses me of being in love with Stack was drastic beyond belief; and my one big scene of trying to sell Herbert Marshall on my old-fashioned ideas was the crux of my performance...anyone could have played my part as it stands now. I'm heartsick beyond belief... (a lot)
