Second printed edition. The Hamburg Qur'an was long believed to be the first printed edition, however, there exists a unique surviving copy discovered in Venice in 1987 (see A. Nuovo "Il Corano arabo ritrovato" in Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). The Hamburg Qur'an remains the first obtainable printed edition. Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-1695), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Koranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. Schnurrer 376; Smitskamp 360.
