EARLY 17TH-CENTURY NUREMBERG SILVER BINDING MAKER'S MARK "EH" EMBOSSED, CHASED AND PIERCED and mounted to upper and lower cover of a plain calf binding, spine gilt in 5 compartments, upper cover with a central depiction of a standing Jesus carring the cross before an architectual background, surrounded by 6 apostles, the other apostles are on the back cover, all seated, some holding books or armor, other decoration includes a winged cherub, scrollwork, a floral arrangement and masks, two silver clasps, edges gilt (a few small silver pieces broken off); brown morocco clamshell case. Provenance: Thomas Fludyer (ownership inscription on title).
VERY RARE AND UNUSUAL EARLY 17TH-CENTURY GERMAN SILVER BINDING maker's mark of "EH" of Nuremberg. The silver binding pre-dates the book, and was presumably cut down to fit this binding. Wing B-3650.
