A PROMISSORY NOTE FROM GOVERNOR HANCOCK. Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts since 1780 and one of the wealthiest men in the new United States pens a simple promissory note: "I promise to pay Miss Sarah Francis Eighty four Dollars whenever she calls for it..." Beneath, Hancock has affixed a bold example of his ornate and now famous signature.
