THE GREAT ORATOR COUNSELS "NEXT TO YOUR DUTY TO GOD, CONSIDER YOUR DUTY TO SOCIETY"
Avuncular advice from a great orator to a young niece at a "dangerous time of life": "You are the youngest Child of your dear departed Father & Mother. I am the only Uncle you have by your Father or Mother. It is natural for me to be anxious for the Welfare of one so near to, & left at so tender an Age in the wide World. I never expect to see you. The Report of your Beauty & good sense has reached us. But these must be accompanyed by Prudence & Virtue or they are worthless. Next to your duty to God, consider your Duty to Society, The first among Society, are your Sisters & Brother whom you are to respect & love. Cherish them to your Bosom in preference to all others. My dear Dolly I charge you keep in Love & tender Intercourse with your Sisters. Ask their counsel & follow it. Visit them all, & remember the dangerous Time of Life at which you are arrived. God bless you my niece & so says yr Aunt & Namesake. Write us."
An attractive full autograph letter of the Virginia patriot; his ALSs are increasingly scarce.
