Lot Essay

Daughter of the collector, George Augustus Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck, M.P. (1821-1891), Mrs Arthur James owned a notable collection of pictures, many of which were acquired by her husband from her father's posthumous sale in these Rooms in 1891. Widowed in 1917, she was a formidable figure in the social world and on her death in 1948 she bequeathed a number of her most treasured pictures to the National Gallery.
