Lot Essay
Dr Mary Newcome Schleier has kindly confirmed the attribution to Biscaino on studying the drawing in the original.
This composition seems to have been engraved by the artist with the composition adapted to a landscape format. The Finding of Moses seems to have been among Biscaino's favourite subjects. Drawings of that theme are in the Uffizi (M. Newcome Schleier, Disegni genovesi dal XVI al XVIII secolo, exhib. cat., Florence, Uffizi, 1989, no. 67), the Koenig-Fachsenfeld Collection, Stuttgart (M. Newcome, Genoese Baroque Drawings, exhib. cat., Binghampton, University Art Gallery, and elsewhere, 1972, no. 72), and the Albertina (V. Birke and J. Kertész, Die Italienischen Zeichnungen der Albertina, Vienna, 1995, III, no. 2884). In addition to the print for which the present drawing is a study there is also a circular etching of the infant Moses alone (B. 1). There is also a painting of the subject in a private collection in Genoa (C. Manzitti, 'Per Bartolomeo Biscaino', Paragone, 253 (1971), fig. 30).
